ÉRIC LE PAPE CREATES HIS PAINTINGS IN THE PRIVACY OF HIS STUDIO,

reliving over and over again the emotions he has felt in order to translate them into their true forms…

I sculpt and de-sculpt

in an endless and generous game of painting.

Using my palette knife,

I repeatedly go over the various flat tints of colour, spreading them to draw curves, making colours appear or disappear and echoing tones that are already present on the canvas.

BACKGROUND, TECHNIQUE & INSPIRATION

I have been immersed in colour since I was a boy, my feet buried in the seaweed and my hands freely applying thick layers of ultramarine and cerulean blues with palette knives.

My first job as a sailor gave me the opportunity to refine my paintings and to make them more realistic. Throughout the course of this career, I was able to draw from my numerous travels, in this case at sea, to develop my sense of vision, my freedom of interpretation and my inspiration.

I paint exclusively with a palette knife. The first stroke is what is essential. It is what creates movement and curves. I focus on the essentials. The spontaneity of my gesture follows my gaze. I structure the main blocks, then refine the details, using a variety of shapes and the touch of my palette knife. And that is how my paintings take the form of sculptures.

My paintings – so full of colour and emotion – reflect my passion for Brittany, and especially my favourite sources of inspiration: the Bay of Morlaix, Carantec or Pont-Aven and its abers.

The peaceful little harbours where the boats are reflected in soft or hard shadows, the bays and the estuaries are all captured using thick layers of paint applied with palette knives. And then there is the sea, sometimes still rippling after a windy swell.
